The North Node in the birth chart: every sign and house, with exact dates from our chart engine

Order Natal Heavy View sample report

What does the North Node mean in a birth chart? The North Node is the point where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's path heading north. Astrologers read it as your direction of growth: the qualities you are here to develop. The South Node, always exactly opposite, shows the familiar habits and talents you lean on, and need to move beyond.

The nodes are not planets but points, and they move backwards through the zodiac, taking 18.61 years to circle it once. This page uses the mean node, the smoothed position most astrologers use, which in our chart engine's record never moves forward. Every date and position below comes from Astrology-API.io, the chart engine behind our reports (tropical zodiac, geocentric apparent positions, Placidus houses, mean node), queried for this page. The orbs are our own published site rule. Where the astrology is interpretation rather than astronomy, we say so.

How to use this page. Find your North Node sign by birth date in the sign sections; your South Node is in the opposite sign. Your nodal house needs an accurate birth time (why). Then read your nodal cycle, eclipses and the node's contacts with your planets.

Four things that change how the nodes work in your chart:

  1. Angularity. The nodes within 8° of the Ascendant–Descendant or MC–IC axis make your life direction visible in identity, relationships, career or home.
  2. Planets on the nodes. A planet conjunct the North Node is a resource for your growth; a planet on the South Node is a strong, familiar talent.
  3. The Moon and Sun. The nodes are where eclipses happen, so planets near them are often activated by eclipses.
  4. Mean or true node. Astrologers use either the mean node (the average position) or the true node (which wobbles). They stay close together, but the true node does briefly move forward: in 2026 alone our chart engine records 26 turns to direct motion, the longest forward spell lasting 6.2 days (21 Aug 2026 to 27 Aug 2026). This page uses the mean node throughout.

North Node in the signs

The North Node's sign shows the qualities you are growing into; the South Node, in the opposite sign, shows what comes easily but keeps you stuck. Because the mean node spends exactly 1.55 years in each sign, everyone born within the same 1.55-year stretch shares a nodal sign. The tables list every passage from 1950 to 2050 so you can find yours.

Your nodal cycle: nodal return and reversal

When is my nodal return? At ages 18.6, 37.2, 55.8, 74.5 and 93.1. Because the mean node moves at a steady pace, our chart engine's exact hits give the same ages for everyone born on 1 January of every fifth year from 1915 to 2020. Nodal returns are often turning points, when life pushes you back onto your path.

Ephemeris facts. The nodal reversal, when the North Node crosses your natal South Node, is exact at ages 9.3, 27.9, 46.5, 65.2 and 83.8, halfway between the returns. The table gives the exact dates for three sample births (12:00 UT on 1 January). Separately, the node re-enters the same sign every 18.61 years in the engine's 1900–2100 sign-entry record.

Event Age (identical in all 22 sample births) Born 1 Jan 1975 Born 1 Jan 1990 Born 1 Jan 2005
Nodal reversal 1 (North Node on natal South Node) 9.3 22 Apr 1984 23 Apr 1999 23 Apr 2014
Nodal return 1 18.6 12 Aug 1993 12 Aug 2008 13 Aug 2023
Nodal reversal 2 (North Node on natal South Node) 27.9 2 Dec 2002 2 Dec 2017 3 Dec 2032
Nodal return 2 37.2 24 Mar 2012 25 Mar 2027 25 Mar 2042
Nodal reversal 3 (North Node on natal South Node) 46.5 14 Jul 2021 14 Jul 2036 15 Jul 2051
Nodal return 3 55.8 3 Nov 2030 3 Nov 2045 3 Nov 2060
Nodal reversal 4 (North Node on natal South Node) 65.2 23 Feb 2040 23 Feb 2055 23 Feb 2070
Nodal return 4 74.5 15 Jun 2049 15 Jun 2064 16 Jun 2079
Nodal reversal 5 (North Node on natal South Node) 83.8 5 Oct 2058 5 Oct 2073 5 Oct 2088
Nodal return 5 93.1 25 Jan 2068 25 Jan 2083 25 Jan 2098

What it is like. At your nodal return, opportunities aligned with your North Node often appear: a new direction, relationship or calling. At the nodal reversal, old patterns resurface and you may feel pulled backwards. Both are chances to choose growth.

Eclipses and the nodes

Why do eclipses happen near the nodes? An eclipse happens when a New or Full Moon occurs close to the nodes, where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's. So eclipses always fall near the signs of the nodal axis, and they move backwards through the zodiac with the nodes. Today that axis is Aquarius–Leo.

Ephemeris facts. Our chart engine lists 913 eclipses between 1900 and 2100: 454 solar and 459 lunar, with 4 to 7 in a year. The table shows each eclipse from 2026 to 2028 and whether the Sun was near the North or South Node.

What it is like. Eclipses near your natal planets or angles are traditionally read as turning points. Our article on eclipse season and the Sun page go further.

North Node aspects

On our site an aspect lives on the page of the faster body, and every planet moves faster than the nodes in that ordering, so each planet's contacts with the North Node are on that planet's page.

Planets on the North Node or South Node. A planet conjunct your North Node is a tool for growth: use it consciously. A planet conjunct your South Node is a well-developed talent that can become a comfort zone. Planets square the nodes, sometimes called skipped steps, point to lessons you must integrate before moving forward.

What does it mean when the North Node is conjunct Uranus? Your path asks you to be original and free; see Uranus–North Node. Uranus conjunct the South Node suggests a natural rebel streak that can become restlessness.

North Node in synastry

Is your North Node your soulmate? Not literally, but when another person's planet sits on your North Node, the relationship often feels fated and pushes you towards growth. A planet on your South Node feels deeply familiar, as if you have known each other before, but can keep you in old patterns.

What it is like. Sun, Moon or Venus contacts to the nodes are the strongest. North Node contacts encourage growth; South Node contacts bring comfort and karma to resolve. Many lasting relationships have both. When someone's Uranus sits on your North Node, the bond shakes up your direction: exciting, unpredictable and liberating, if you can live with surprise.

The gift is growth through relationship. The work is not mistaking familiarity for destiny.

Rahu and Ketu in Vedic astrology

In Vedic astrology the North Node is Rahu and the South Node is Ketu. They are counted among the nine grahas and are always opposite each other. Rahu stands for desire, ambition and the foreign; Ketu for detachment, spirituality and the past. Our engine places the mean North Node at 3°06' Aquarius in the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri ayanamsa 24.23°).

What if Rahu is in the 9th house? Rahu in the 9th brings unconventional beliefs, interest in foreign cultures and teachers, and sometimes friction with tradition or the father. Ketu in the 3rd gives courage without much concern for recognition.

Best house for Rahu. Classical texts favour Rahu in the upachaya houses, the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th, where malefics are said to improve over time.

Rahu and Ketu mahadasha. In the Vimshottari dasha system, Rahu's period lasts 18 years and Ketu's 7. Neither is simply "worse": Rahu's period often brings ambition and change, Ketu's withdrawal and spiritual focus, and results depend on their house, sign and dispositor. Does Rahu mahadasha cause death? No reputable astrologer predicts death from a dasha alone; worrying predictions are best taken to a qualified practitioner, and health concerns to a doctor.

North Node FAQ

Is the North Node karmic?

In modern astrology the nodes are often called the karmic axis: the South Node shows patterns brought from the past, the North Node the growth this life asks for. Whether you read that literally or psychologically is up to you.

What is my South Node?

Always the sign and house exactly opposite your North Node. North Node in Aries means South Node in Libra, and so on.

How long does the North Node stay in a sign?

1.55 years for the mean node, in every sign, according to our chart engine.

Is the North Node always retrograde?

The mean node always moves backwards: our engine shows no forward re-entries into any sign between 1900 and 2100. The true node does move forward for short spells: 26 turns to direct motion in 2026, the longest lasting 6.2 days.

Mean node or true node: which should I use?

Both are valid. The mean node is the smoothed average and is what we use on this page; the true node includes the wobble.

What sign is the North Node in now?

Aquarius, at 27°20' Aquarius on 8 Oct 2026, until 7 Mar 2028.

Sources and method

Every date and position on this page comes from Astrology-API.io v3, the chart engine behind natalblueprint.com reports (tropical zodiac, geocentric apparent positions, Placidus houses, mean lunar node). We queried its ingress, aspect-search, eclipse, position, natal-transit and station endpoints for 1900–2100; no other astronomical data source was used. The 18.61-year nodal cycle is measured between the engine's ingress dates. Transit-to-natal dates and ages (your nodal returns and reversals) are exact hits from the engine's natal-transit search for sample births at 12:00 UT on 1 January of every fifth year from 1915 to 2020; an age is simply the time from that birth to the exact hit, and nothing is interpolated. The true-node figures come from its station search with node reversals switched on (2026). Orbs (8° for the Sun, Moon and angles, 6° otherwise) are our published site rule. Interpretations draw on Martin Schulman, Karmic Astrology, Volume 1: The Moon's Nodes and Reincarnation (1975), Jan Spiller, Astrology for the Soul (1997), and Steven Forrest, Yesterday's Sky: Astrology and Reincarnation (2008); the Vedic section follows the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, and the dasha lengths are those of the Vimshottari system.
