Saturn in the birth chart: every sign and every house, with real ephemeris dates

Order Natal Heavy View sample report

What does Saturn mean in a birth chart? Saturn shows where you are asked to become your own authority: where life feels slow, tested or under-resourced at first, and where patient effort builds something that lasts. Its sign describes the style of that discipline, its house describes the life area, and its aspects describe who or what tests you.

That is the short answer. The rest of this page is the long one, and it is built differently from most Saturn pages. Every date and position below comes from Astrology-API.io, the chart engine behind our reports (tropical zodiac, geocentric apparent positions, Placidus houses, mean node), queried for this page. The orbs are our own published site rule. Where the astrology is interpretation rather than astronomy, we say so.

How to use this page. Find your Saturn sign in the date tables in each sign section (dates are in UT, so if you were born within a day of a change, check your chart). Your Saturn house needs an accurate birth time; see how a birth time puts Saturn in a house. Then read the aspects, your Saturn return timing and the FAQ.

Four ways Saturn's condition changes the reading, used throughout this page:

  1. Essential dignity. Saturn is at home in Capricorn and Aquarius, exalted in Libra, in detriment in Cancer and Leo, and in fall in Aries (Ptolemy, Tetrabiblos I.17–19; Lilly, Christian Astrology, 1647). Dignity describes how easily Saturn does its job, not whether your life is easy.
  2. Sect. Saturn belongs to the day team. In a day chart (Sun above the horizon) it tends to work as structure. In a night chart it is the "out-of-sect" malefic and its demands usually feel harsher (Hellenistic doctrine; see Chris Brennan, Hellenistic Astrology, 2017).
  3. Angularity. Saturn near the Ascendant, IC, Descendant or MC (in or close to the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) is louder in the life than Saturn in a cadent house.
  4. Aspects within orb. A tight contact to the Sun, Moon or an angle (within 8°) makes Saturn personal, and the closer the orb, the louder it is.

Saturn in the signs

Saturn's sign is shared by everyone born in the same window of about 2.2 to 2.74 years, so it describes a generation's style of discipline as much as a personal one. It becomes personal through house, aspects and dignity. Each section below opens with the direct answer, then gives the dates, then the depth.

What does Saturn in Aries mean?

Saturn in Aries means you learn to give yourself permission. Saturn is in its fall here: the planet of patience sits in the sign of the first move. You may hesitate to start, then overcorrect by forcing. Mastery comes from repeated, deliberate beginnings until self-direction feels earned rather than reckless.

Ephemeris facts. Saturn spends 2.38 years in Aries on average (788–919 days per passage); 6 of the 7 complete passages between 1900 and 2100 included a retrograde dip back into Pisces. Saturn is in Aries right now (11°01' Aries on 8 Oct 2026). It turned retrograde on 26 Jul 2026 at 14°45' Aries and turns direct on 10 Dec 2026 at 7°56' Aries. Shortly after Saturn re-entered Aries in February 2026 (see the table), it met Neptune at 0°45' Aries on 20 Feb 2026. The two travelled close together through 2025 and 2026, so many Saturn-in-Aries babies of those years carry that conjunction too; check the orb in your own chart.

Passage Dates Saturn was in Aries (UT)
1937–40 25 Apr 1937 – 18 Oct 1937 and 14 Jan 1938 – 6 Jul 1939 and 22 Sep 1939 – 20 Mar 1940
1967–69 3 Mar 1967 – 29 Apr 1969
1996–99 7 Apr 1996 – 9 Jun 1998 and 25 Oct 1998 – 1 Mar 1999
2025–28 25 May 2025 – 1 Sep 2025 and 14 Feb 2026 – 13 Apr 2028
2055–58 22 Mar 2055 – 20 May 2057 and 29 Nov 2057 – 31 Jan 2058

What it is like. Fall does not mean weak. It means Saturn has to work against the sign's instinct. Aries wants to act now; Saturn wants proof first. Lived from the inside, that often looks like a stop–start pattern: long stretches of waiting for someone to sanction your move, then a sudden decision that feels like rebellion. Anger is a Saturn-in-Aries teacher. If it is swallowed, it turns into chronic frustration or the sense that your body is braced for a fight that never comes.

The gift is courage that has been tested: you do not start lightly, so what you start tends to survive. People with this placement often become the person who steps first in a crisis because they have rehearsed it. The work is to separate initiative from defiance. Ask, before each start, "Am I acting, or reacting to being held back?" Then build one small, self-chosen beginning into each week, so leadership becomes a practised skill rather than an outburst.

Those born 1996–99 are having their first Saturn return in Aries now (2025–28), and those born in 1967–69 their second.

What does Saturn in Taurus mean?

Saturn in Taurus means security has to be built, not assumed. Money, the body and comfort are where you meet limits early, and where steady accumulation pays off. The shadow is a scarcity mindset that hoards time, money or affection. The gift is real, durable resources: skills, savings and a body you have learned to trust.

Ephemeris facts. Saturn averages 2.28 years in Taurus (779–861 days); 6 of 7 complete passages had a retrograde re-entry. The 1998–2001 passage is unusually dense: Saturn squared Uranus from Taurus 3 times (18 Jul 1999 at 15°37' Taurus; 14 Nov 1999 at 13°04' Taurus; 13 May 2000 at 20°46' Taurus), and on 28 May 2000 Jupiter and Saturn met at 22°43' Taurus. The next passage opens on 13 Apr 2028 and includes a Saturn–Pluto square, exact 3 times (24 Jun 2028 to 29 Mar 2029).

Passage Dates Saturn was in Taurus (UT)
1939–42 6 Jul 1939 – 22 Sep 1939 and 20 Mar 1940 – 8 May 1942
1969–72 29 Apr 1969 – 18 Jun 1971 and 10 Jan 1972 – 21 Feb 1972
1998–01 9 Jun 1998 – 25 Oct 1998 and 1 Mar 1999 – 10 Aug 2000 and 16 Oct 2000 – 20 Apr 2001
2028–30 13 Apr 2028 – 1 Jun 2030
2057–60 20 May 2057 – 29 Nov 2057 and 31 Jan 2058 – 12 Jul 2059 and 21 Nov 2059 – 31 Mar 2060

What it is like. Taurus is ruled by Venus and wants things that feel good and stay put. Saturn adds a ledger. You may remember early experiences of "not enough": money that was counted out loud, or a childhood where comfort was earned. As an adult that becomes either impressive frugality or a fear of spending anything, including rest and pleasure. The body often keeps the score here. Tension sits in the neck, jaw or throat (Taurus's traditional body zone), and Saturn's slowness can feel like inertia.

The gift is patience with compounding. You are built for the long game: the savings plan, the craft that takes ten years, the relationship tended rather than chased. The work is to notice when "security" has become a reason never to change. Practical operation: give every resource a purpose. Money that is for something can be spent without guilt, and money set aside "just in case" turns into a fortress you live inside.

What does Saturn in Gemini mean?

Saturn in Gemini means you take thinking and speaking seriously, sometimes too seriously. You may have felt slow, misheard or self-conscious about words when you were young, then built a precise, well-sourced mind. In the Dorothean scheme Saturn rules the air triplicity by day, so this is a workable placement: discipline applied to information.

Ephemeris facts. Gemini is Saturn's quickest sign: it averages 2.2 years (774–841 days), and 4 of 7 complete passages involved a retrograde re-entry. The 2000–03 passage carries a generational signature. Saturn opposed Pluto from Gemini 3 times (5 Aug 2001 at 12°38' Gemini; 2 Nov 2001 at 13°49' Gemini; 26 May 2002 at 16°36' Gemini), so many people born around 2001–02 have natal Saturn opposite Pluto (see Saturn–Pluto). Next passage: from 1 Jun 2030.

Passage Dates Saturn was in Gemini (UT)
1942–44 8 May 1942 – 20 Jun 1944
1971–74 18 Jun 1971 – 10 Jan 1972 and 21 Feb 1972 – 1 Aug 1973 and 7 Jan 1974 – 18 Apr 1974
2000–03 10 Aug 2000 – 16 Oct 2000 and 20 Apr 2001 – 4 Jun 2003
2030–32 1 Jun 2030 – 14 Jul 2032
2059–62 12 Jul 2059 – 21 Nov 2059 and 31 Mar 2060 – 1 Sep 2061 and 24 Nov 2061 – 16 May 2062

What it is like. Gemini is curious and quick, and Saturn slows it down to check its facts. Some people with this placement describe a childhood of being corrected: a teacher, a sibling or a parent who made speaking feel risky. The adult result can be over-preparation, reluctance to speak until you are sure, and a quiet contempt for sloppy thinking (including your own). Learning may have come later or through unconventional routes, and it sticks because you had to build it.

The gift is authority in communication: editors, analysts, teachers, technical writers and anyone whose words must hold weight. The work is to let ideas be provisional. Practical operation: separate drafting from judging. Write or speak a rough version first and edit second. Saturn in Gemini locks up when you try to do both at once.

What does Saturn in Cancer mean?

Saturn in Cancer means you learned to look after yourself early. Saturn is in detriment here, a cold planet in the sign of nurture. Emotional safety, family and home are where you meet restriction. You often become the caretaker before you have been cared for. The task is to let support in without feeling you have failed.

Ephemeris facts. Saturn spends 2.22 years in Cancer on average (773–859 days); 4 of 7 complete passages had a retrograde re-entry. The 2003–05 passage was a single unbroken window (4 Jun 2003 – 16 Jul 2005). The 1973–76 cohort has Saturn square Pluto, exact 3 times (14 Sep 1973 at 3°48' Cancer; 7 Oct 1973 at 4°40' Cancer; 28 May 1974 at 4°08' Cancer). The next passage opens on 14 Jul 2032, with Saturn squaring Neptune (16 Sep 2033 to 25 Jun 2034).

Passage Dates Saturn was in Cancer (UT)
1944–46 20 Jun 1944 – 2 Aug 1946
1973–76 1 Aug 1973 – 7 Jan 1974 and 18 Apr 1974 – 17 Sep 1975 and 14 Jan 1976 – 5 Jun 1976
2003–05 4 Jun 2003 – 16 Jul 2005
2032–35 14 Jul 2032 – 27 Aug 2034 and 15 Feb 2035 – 11 May 2035

What it is like. Detriment means Saturn is in the sign opposite its home (Capricorn), so its tools do not fit the room. Cancer's currency is closeness; Saturn's is self-sufficiency. Common lived patterns include a family where feelings were managed rather than expressed, being the "responsible one" in the household, and a strong pull to create the stable home you did not quite have. Emotional restraint can read as coolness to others, while inside it feels like vigilance.

The gift is a reliable, protective presence. You make other people feel held because you know exactly what the absence of that feels like. The work is reciprocity. Practical operation: once a week, ask for one specific form of help you could have managed alone. Saturn in Cancer matures when receiving stops feeling like debt.

What does Saturn in Leo mean?

Saturn in Leo means you have to earn the right to shine in your own eyes. Saturn is in detriment in the Sun's sign, so self-expression, creativity and recognition feel tested. You may perform competence while privately bracing for judgement. Over time you build creative authority that does not depend on applause.

Ephemeris facts. Saturn averages 2.26 years in Leo (778–868 days). On 11 Aug 1947 it met Pluto at 13°07' Leo, so the 1946–48 cohort carries the Saturn–Pluto conjunction. The 1975–78 cohort has Saturn square Uranus (5 exact hits, 4 Oct 1975 to 22 Apr 1977), and the 2005–07 cohort has Saturn opposite Neptune (3 exact hits, 31 Aug 2006 to 25 Jun 2007). The next passage opens on 27 Aug 2034 and brings the next Saturn–Pluto opposition (17 Oct 2035 to 28 Jul 2036).

Passage Dates Saturn was in Leo (UT)
1946–49 2 Aug 1946 – 19 Sep 1948 and 3 Apr 1949 – 29 May 1949
1975–78 17 Sep 1975 – 14 Jan 1976 and 5 Jun 1976 – 17 Nov 1977 and 5 Jan 1978 – 26 Jul 1978
2005–07 16 Jul 2005 – 2 Sep 2007
2034–37 27 Aug 2034 – 15 Feb 2035 and 11 May 2035 – 16 Oct 2036 and 11 Feb 2037 – 7 Jul 2037

What it is like. Leo wants to be seen and loved for it; Saturn wants the work checked first. That combination often shows up as a strong creative drive with a harsh internal critic, leadership roles taken on dutifully rather than joyfully, or a parent whose approval was conditional. Pride can be both your armour and your sore spot: being overlooked stings far more than you let on.

The gift is durable creative authority: the director, the teacher or the maker whose work improves with age. The work is play without stakes. Practical operation: keep one creative practice that is never shown, sold or graded. Saturn in Leo heals when expression is allowed to be a joy before it is a credential.

Where it plays out. The house holding Saturn names the stage: in the 5th, creativity and children; in the 10th, public reputation; in the 1st, your body and manner. A Sun–Saturn aspect makes the identity lesson harder; fire-heavy charts tend to dramatise the duty, earth-heavy ones turn it into a brand.

Shadow and integration. The fear underneath is being ordinary, so the performance gets over-controlled. The goal is authorship without tyranny: directing the scene without punishing anyone who misses a cue, including yourself. When envy of people who seem to shine without effort flares up, ask what craft you skipped in favour of a shortcut to applause.

How it tends to show up: creative or public work that matures slowly and then lasts; pride that has to be backed by competence; recurring tests around credit, visibility and authority figures; and a habit of treating unfinished work as an unpaid debt. A practical move: finish one visible piece before starting three more.

What does Saturn in Virgo mean?

Saturn in Virgo means you build competence through precision, and you can drown in it. Work, health routines and usefulness are your proving ground. You notice what is wrong first and fix it well. The shadow is perfectionism and worry dressed up as responsibility. The gift is mastery of a craft or system that others rely on.

Ephemeris facts. Saturn averages 2.34 years in Virgo (787–908 days). The 2007–10 passage is a generational marker: Saturn opposed Uranus 5 times (4 Nov 2008 at 18°58' Virgo; 5 Feb 2009 at 20°39' Virgo; 15 Sep 2009 at 24°43' Virgo; 26 Apr 2010 at 28°46' Virgo; 26 Jul 2010 at 0°25' Libra; the last hit fell just after Saturn entered Libra), so many births of 2008–10 carry Saturn opposite Uranus. The 1979–80 Virgo cohort has Saturn square Neptune (3 exact hits, 14 Sep 1979 to 22 Jun 1980). Next passage: from 16 Oct 2036.

Passage Dates Saturn was in Virgo (UT)
1948–51 19 Sep 1948 – 3 Apr 1949 and 29 May 1949 – 20 Nov 1950 and 7 Mar 1951 – 13 Aug 1951
1977–80 17 Nov 1977 – 5 Jan 1978 and 26 Jul 1978 – 21 Sep 1980
2007–10 2 Sep 2007 – 29 Oct 2009 and 7 Apr 2010 – 21 Jul 2010
2036–39 16 Oct 2036 – 11 Feb 2037 and 7 Jul 2037 – 5 Sep 2039

What it is like. Virgo is Mercury's earth sign: practical intelligence, discernment, service. Saturn turns discernment into a standard that is never quite met. Many people with this placement keep invisible lists, feel anxious when routines break, or express care through doing rather than saying. The body may be where stress shows first: digestion and sleep are common barometers (Virgo is traditionally linked with the digestive tract), though the placement itself diagnoses nothing.

The gift is reliability and skill. You get things right, and you know how. The work is to set a finish line before you start. Practical operation: define "good enough" in writing for each task. Saturn in Virgo relaxes when the standard is external and finite rather than internal and endless.

What does Saturn in Libra mean?

Saturn in Libra means you take commitment and fairness seriously. This is Saturn's exaltation (traditionally strongest at 21° Libra). Relationships, contracts and justice are where you learn structure, often through early disappointment in partnerships, and you grow into someone who keeps agreements and expects others to.

Ephemeris facts. Saturn averages 2.52 years in Libra (821–981 days), and all 7 of 7 complete passages had a retrograde re-entry. Several passages carry major conjunctions. In 1952–53 Saturn met Neptune 3 times, almost on the exaltation degree (21 Nov 1952 at 22°47' Libra; 17 May 1953 at 21°38' Libra; 22 Jul 1953 at 21°12' Libra). Jupiter and Saturn conjoined in Libra on 31 Dec 1980 / 4 Mar 1981 / 24 Jul 1981. Saturn met Pluto at 27°36' Libra on 8 Nov 1982. The next Jupiter–Saturn conjunction falls in Libra again, at 17°56' Libra on 31 Oct 2040.

Passage Dates Saturn was in Libra (UT)
1950–53 20 Nov 1950 – 7 Mar 1951 and 13 Aug 1951 – 22 Oct 1953
1980–83 21 Sep 1980 – 29 Nov 1982 and 6 May 1983 – 24 Aug 1983
2009–12 29 Oct 2009 – 7 Apr 2010 and 21 Jul 2010 – 5 Oct 2012
2039–42 5 Sep 2039 – 11 Nov 2041 and 21 Jun 2042 – 14 Jul 2042

What it is like. Saturn and Libra share a love of measure: the scales, the rule, the balanced account. That is why tradition exalts Saturn here. Lived, it can mean caution about commitment until you are sure it is fair, a habit of keeping score in relationships, or a strong reaction to injustice that started early (who got blamed, who was believed). Partnerships may come later or be entered with unusual seriousness, but the placement does not set a marriage date.

The gift is integrity in relationships: you are the colleague, partner or friend whose word holds. The work is to let fairness include mercy. Practical operation: in conflict, name what each person needs before deciding who is right. Saturn in Libra matures when justice serves the relationship rather than replacing it.

What does Saturn in Scorpio mean, and is it weak?

Saturn in Scorpio means you build strength by facing what is hidden: power, intimacy, money you share and loss. It is not a weak or debilitated Saturn. It has no essential dignity here, and Saturn's debilities are Cancer and Leo (detriment) and Aries (fall). The task is to trust without surrendering control, and to control without closing off.

Ephemeris facts. Saturn averages 2.6 years in Scorpio (901–1029 days), among its longer signs, and all 6 of 6 complete passages had a retrograde re-entry. The 1982–85 cohort entered Scorpio just after the Saturn–Pluto conjunction of 8 Nov 1982. Saturn entered Scorpio on 29 Nov 1982, only weeks after the exact hit, so the earliest Saturn-in-Scorpio births of that passage can still have Saturn conjunct Pluto within our 6° orb; check your chart. The 1953–56 cohort has Saturn square Pluto (27 Dec 1955 at 28°26' Scorpio; 2 Jul 1956 at 26°48' Scorpio; 7 Oct 1956 at 29°43' Scorpio). Most recent passage: 5 Oct 2012 – 18 Sep 2015. Next: from 11 Nov 2041.

Passage Dates Saturn was in Scorpio (UT)
1923–26 20 Dec 1923 – 6 Apr 1924 and 13 Sep 1924 – 2 Dec 1926
1953–56 22 Oct 1953 – 12 Jan 1956 and 14 May 1956 – 10 Oct 1956
1982–85 29 Nov 1982 – 6 May 1983 and 24 Aug 1983 – 17 Nov 1985
2012–15 5 Oct 2012 – 23 Dec 2014 and 15 Jun 2015 – 18 Sep 2015
2041–44 11 Nov 2041 – 21 Jun 2042 and 14 Jul 2042 – 21 Feb 2044 and 25 Mar 2044 – 31 Oct 2044

What it is like. Scorpio is fixed water ruled by Mars (and, in modern astrology, Pluto): depth, endurance, all-or-nothing. Saturn adds a lock. People with this placement often describe early lessons in secrecy or power, such as a household where something was never spoken or a sense that vulnerability could be used against you. As adults they can be formidable: strategic, private, unflappable in crisis. The cost is guardedness that keeps even trusted people at arm's length, and control around money, sex or emotion that tightens under stress.

The gift is psychological stamina. You can stay with what others flee from, which suits therapy, finance, research, medicine and crisis work. The work is graded trust. Practical operation: decide in advance what you will share with whom, and share that much on schedule. Saturn in Scorpio opens through deliberate, small disclosures, not grand leaps.

Common questions about Saturn in Scorpio

  • Is Saturn debilitated in Scorpio? No, in either Western or Vedic astrology. In both, Saturn's fall (debilitation) is Aries.
  • Is Saturn in Scorpio a good placement? It is a demanding one that tends to produce depth and resilience; whether it feels good depends on sect, house and aspects.

What does Saturn in Sagittarius mean?

Saturn in Sagittarius means your beliefs are built, not inherited. Faith, education, travel and meaning are tested: you may doubt early, question every system, then construct a philosophy you can defend. The shadow is cynicism or rigid dogma. The gift is earned wisdom that survives contact with real life.

Ephemeris facts. Saturn averages 2.74 years in Sagittarius (939–1094 days), the longest stay of any sign in the 1900–2100 data. The 1985–88 passage ends with 3 Saturn–Uranus conjunctions in late Sagittarius (13 Feb 1988 / 26 Jun 1988 / 18 Oct 1988). The 2014–17 cohort has Saturn square Neptune (26 Nov 2015 at 7°02' Sagittarius; 18 Jun 2016 at 12°02' Sagittarius; 10 Sep 2016 at 10°25' Sagittarius). Next passage: from 21 Feb 2044.

Passage Dates Saturn was in Sagittarius (UT)
1926–29 2 Dec 1926 – 15 Mar 1929 and 5 May 1929 – 30 Nov 1929
1956–59 12 Jan 1956 – 14 May 1956 and 10 Oct 1956 – 5 Jan 1959
1985–88 17 Nov 1985 – 13 Feb 1988 and 10 Jun 1988 – 12 Nov 1988
2014–17 23 Dec 2014 – 15 Jun 2015 and 18 Sep 2015 – 20 Dec 2017
2044–47 21 Feb 2044 – 25 Mar 2044 and 31 Oct 2044 – 24 Jan 2047 and 11 Jul 2047 – 22 Oct 2047

What it is like. Sagittarius wants the big picture and the open road; Saturn asks for evidence and a route. Some people with this placement grew up with strict religious or moral frameworks they later dismantled. Others grew up with none and went looking. Education can be interrupted, delayed or pursued with unusual seriousness. There is often impatience with preachy optimism, yours included.

The gift is a philosophy with load-bearing walls: teachers, lawyers, editors and guides who know why they believe what they believe. The work is to keep the question open. Practical operation: once a year, review one strongly held belief against new evidence, and write down what would change your mind.

Is Saturn in Capricorn good or bad?

Saturn in Capricorn is Saturn at its strongest by dignity, but dignity is not ease. This is Saturn's own sign (domicile). Ambition, responsibility and structure come naturally, and you are built to carry weight. The risk is carrying too much: duty that eclipses feeling, and success measured only by achievement.

Ephemeris facts. Saturn averages 2.7 years in Capricorn (934–1094 days); 6 of 7 complete passages had a retrograde re-entry. The last time Saturn was in Capricorn was 20 Dec 2017 – 17 Dec 2020 (including a retrograde dip into Aquarius and back in 2020). That passage peaked with the Saturn–Pluto conjunction at 22°47' Capricorn on 12 Jan 2020. The 1988–91 cohort has Saturn conjunct Neptune (3 Mar 1989 at 11°55' Capricorn; 24 Jun 1989 at 11°14' Capricorn; 13 Nov 1989 at 10°22' Capricorn), and many also have Saturn conjunct Uranus. The 2017–20 passage ended with Saturn on the 29th degree of Capricorn (see our article on the 29th degree of Saturn). Saturn's next Capricorn passage begins on 24 Jan 2047.

Passage Dates Saturn was in Capricorn (UT)
1929–32 15 Mar 1929 – 5 May 1929 and 30 Nov 1929 – 24 Feb 1932 and 13 Aug 1932 – 20 Nov 1932
1959–62 5 Jan 1959 – 3 Jan 1962
1988–91 13 Feb 1988 – 10 Jun 1988 and 12 Nov 1988 – 6 Feb 1991
2017–20 20 Dec 2017 – 22 Mar 2020 and 1 Jul 2020 – 17 Dec 2020
2047–50 24 Jan 2047 – 11 Jul 2047 and 22 Oct 2047 – 21 Jan 2050

What it is like. In its own sign Saturn works exactly as designed: long horizons, earned status, respect for structure and time. People with this placement are often old young people. They take on responsibility early, are trusted by authority figures, and feel most themselves when they are useful and in charge of something. The shadow is a life organised entirely around performance, where rest feels like falling behind and feelings are scheduled for "later".

The gift is authority that is real because it was built: management, institutions, craft and any field where mastery compounds. The work is to define success in more than one currency. Practical operation: track one non-achievement measure (sleep, time with people, unstructured hours) as seriously as you track goals.

Common questions about Saturn in Capricorn

  • Why is Capricorn ruled by Saturn? In Ptolemy's scheme (Tetrabiblos I.17), the luminaries take Cancer and Leo, and the planets take the signs outward in order of distance. Saturn, the slowest and most distant classical planet, takes the two signs opposite the luminaries: Capricorn and Aquarius.
  • What year will Saturn be in Capricorn next? From 24 Jan 2047. Use the table above for exact windows.

What does Saturn in Aquarius mean?

Saturn in Aquarius means you build structures that serve a group, and you learn to belong without disappearing into it. Aquarius is Saturn's traditional second home, and Saturn rules the air triplicity by day. Principles, systems, friendship and community are where you get serious. The shadow is detachment.

Ephemeris facts. Saturn averages 2.64 years in Aquarius (901–1047 days), and all 7 of 7 complete passages had a retrograde re-entry. The 2020–23 passage began with the Jupiter–Saturn "great conjunction" at 0°29' Aquarius on 21 Dec 2020, then 3 Saturn–Uranus squares (17 Feb 2021 to 24 Dec 2021). The 1991–94 cohort has Saturn square Pluto. Next passage: from 21 Jan 2050.

Passage Dates Saturn was in Aquarius (UT)
1932–35 24 Feb 1932 – 13 Aug 1932 and 20 Nov 1932 – 14 Feb 1935
1962–64 3 Jan 1962 – 24 Mar 1964 and 16 Sep 1964 – 16 Dec 1964
1991–94 6 Feb 1991 – 21 May 1993 and 30 Jun 1993 – 28 Jan 1994
2020–23 22 Mar 2020 – 1 Jul 2020 and 17 Dec 2020 – 7 Mar 2023
2050–53 21 Jan 2050 – 16 Apr 2052 and 9 Aug 2052 – 11 Jan 2053

What it is like. Traditional Aquarius is Saturnian: rules, systems, the logic that holds a group together. Modern Aquarius adds Uranus: reform, the outsider, the network. People with Saturn here often feel like an observer of groups even while running them. They may have experienced early exclusion, being the odd one out, then built a life around communities they chose. Values are principled and can be held so tightly that individual feelings get overruled by the cause.

The gift is systems thinking with ethics: organisers, engineers, scientists and reformers who make institutions work better. The work is warmth inside the structure. Practical operation: for every rule you enforce, name the person it protects.

What does Saturn in Pisces mean?

Saturn in Pisces means giving shape to what has no edges: feeling, faith, imagination and compassion. You may have felt overwhelmed by other people's emotions or by vague fears when you were young. Over time you build boundaries and practices that turn sensitivity into service or art. The shadow is escapism or self-sacrifice.

Ephemeris facts. Saturn averages 2.52 years in Pisces (840–984 days); all 7 of 7 complete passages had a retrograde re-entry. The 1964–67 cohort is unusual: Saturn in Pisces opposed both Uranus (5 exact hits, 1 Apr 1965 to 6 Jan 1967) and Pluto (3 exact hits, 23 Apr 1965 to 20 Feb 1966) in Virgo. The most recent passage ran 7 Mar 2023 – 14 Feb 2026 and included 2 Jupiter–Saturn squares (19 Aug 2024 to 24 Dec 2024). Pisces is also the sign of the next Saturn–Pluto conjunction (15 Jun 2053 / 10 Jul 2053 / 2 Feb 2054).

Passage Dates Saturn was in Pisces (UT)
1935–38 14 Feb 1935 – 25 Apr 1937 and 18 Oct 1937 – 14 Jan 1938
1964–67 24 Mar 1964 – 16 Sep 1964 and 16 Dec 1964 – 3 Mar 1967
1993–96 21 May 1993 – 30 Jun 1993 and 28 Jan 1994 – 7 Apr 1996
2023–26 7 Mar 2023 – 25 May 2025 and 1 Sep 2025 – 14 Feb 2026
2052–55 16 Apr 2052 – 9 Aug 2052 and 11 Jan 2053 – 22 Mar 2055

What it is like. Pisces is mutable water ruled by Jupiter (and, in modern astrology, Neptune). It wants to merge, imagine and dissolve. Saturn asks it to hold a shape. In practice that can mean anxiety without an obvious source, a strong conscience, difficulty saying no, or a spiritual or creative life that only works once it has a discipline: a daily practice, a training, a container.

The gift is grounded compassion: clinicians, artists, carers and contemplatives who can stay present with suffering without drowning. The work is boundaries as a spiritual practice, not a betrayal of it. Practical operation: before agreeing to help, ask what it will cost you and whether you will resent it. If you will, the answer is a smaller yes.

Saturn in the houses

What does Saturn's house mean? The house shows the area of life where Saturn's lessons land: where you start out feeling behind or under-resourced, where you take responsibility, and where your effort compounds over the years. Unlike the sign, the house needs an accurate birth time, because Saturn moves through all twelve houses every day.

Why birth time matters so much. As the Earth turns, Saturn rises, culminates, sets and reaches the lowest point of the chart once a day, like the Sun, so it passes through all twelve houses in a single day. Placidus houses are unequal, and how long Saturn stays in each one depends on the date and your latitude. A birth time that is out by an hour or two can therefore move Saturn into the neighbouring house. If your time is approximate, read both houses and see which one sounds like your life. Our charts use Placidus houses and the rule that a planet belongs to the last house cusp it has passed. Whole-sign houses can give a different answer, especially near a cusp, and we check that as a secondary reading.

The houses also tell you where Saturn was in the sky at birth, which is the most literal way to read them:

Saturn's house Where Saturn was in the sky at birth
1st Just below the eastern horizon: it rose in the hours after you were born
12th Just above the eastern horizon: it rose in the hours before you were born
10th Climbing toward its highest point, which it reached in the hours after birth
9th Just past its highest point, which it reached in the hours before birth
7th Low in the west: it set in the hours after birth
4th Approaching its lowest point under the Earth, reached in the hours after birth
2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th Between those turning points, further from the next one

What does Saturn in the 1st house mean?

Saturn in the 1st house means you meet the world with seriousness, and you become your own authority the slow way. Saturn was rising when you were born, so its themes sit on the surface: reserve, self-control, a sense of being older than your years. Confidence comes late but is built to last.

Where it was in the sky. Saturn in the 1st house means it crossed the Ascendant in the hours after your birth. This is an angular house, so Saturn here is one of the loudest placements in the chart, especially if it is within 8° of the Ascendant.

What it is like. The 1st house is the body, the face you lead with and your instinctive response to new situations. With Saturn here, many people report a childhood in which they were expected to be "sensible", look composed and not take up space. Others read you as competent, guarded or stern before you have said a word. Inside, it can feel like a constant audit: am I doing this right? Physical discipline (training, posture, routine) often becomes a way to feel at home in the body.

The gift is presence that earns trust. With age, people with Saturn in the 1st often look and feel better, not worse; the old astrological phrase "old when young, young when old" fits. The work is to stop seeking permission to exist. Practical operation: notice when you are performing composure and choose one situation each week to be visibly unfinished.

Saturn in the 1st house: common questions

  • Is Saturn in the first house good? It is demanding rather than bad. It slows early self-confidence and rewards persistence. In a day chart, or with Saturn in Capricorn, Aquarius or Libra, it usually works as backbone.
  • What is the karma of Saturn in the 1st house? In evolutionary astrology the lesson is self-responsibility: learning to stand on your own authority instead of waiting for someone else's verdict. We read "karma" as a pattern to work with, not a debt being repaid.
  • What does Saturn retrograde in the 1st house mean? About 36.4% of births have Saturn retrograde. In the 1st, it tends to turn the self-audit inward: standards are self-set and harder to satisfy, and confidence comes from private proof rather than outside approval.
  • Does Saturn in the 1st house give long life? No placement can predict lifespan, and we don't attempt it. Traditional texts link Saturn with longevity themes, but that is symbolism, not a forecast.
  • What do Jupiter and Saturn together in the 1st house mean? Expansion and restraint share the front door. You can come across as both confident and cautious, and growth tends to happen in measured steps. If they are within 6° of each other, you were born near a Jupiter–Saturn conjunction (the most recent were 28 May 2000 and 21 Dec 2020).

What does Saturn in the 2nd house mean?

Saturn in the 2nd house means money and self-worth are built slowly and deliberately. Early life may have included scarcity or anxiety about resources, and you may still feel you have to earn your value. Over time this placement is associated with durable, carefully accumulated security and an unusually clear sense of what things are really worth.

Where it was in the sky. Saturn in the 2nd house had not yet risen at birth; it was below the eastern horizon, with the 1st house still to cross before it rose.

What it is like. The 2nd house covers money, possessions, skills you can sell and the felt sense of "having enough". With Saturn here, many people describe a frugal or financially strained upbringing, or one in which love was expressed through provision rather than warmth. As adults they are often the person with an emergency fund, sometimes alongside a quiet fear that it will never be enough. Self-worth can get tied to productivity: if you are not earning, you are not worth much.

The gift is financial resilience: budgeting, saving, valuing skill over flash, and wealth that grows through patience. The work is to separate your value from your balance. Practical operation: give every saving goal a name and an end point. "Enough for what?" is the question that turns scarcity into strategy.

Saturn in the 2nd house: common questions

  • Is Saturn in the 2nd house good or bad? Neither in itself. It slows early income and raises the stakes around money, but it is one of the classic signatures of steady, compound wealth when Saturn is well placed by sign or sect. In Vedic astrology the 2nd also governs speech and family, so Saturn here can show careful, sparing speech.
  • What do Jupiter and Saturn in the 2nd house mean? Growth and caution meet in your finances. Typically you can see an opportunity but insist on doing the numbers first. If the two are within 6°, you were born near a Jupiter–Saturn conjunction, such as those of 28 May 2000 or 21 Dec 2020.
  • What does Saturn transiting the 2nd house mean? A multi-year stretch when money, possessions and self-worth get a reality check: budgets tighten, debts get dealt with, and you learn what you actually value. Done well, it leaves you with sturdier finances.
  • Which celebrities have Saturn in the 2nd house? Six well-known people with Rodden AA birth data (from a birth certificate or similar birth record) were born with Saturn in the 2nd house (Placidus houses), as calculated by our chart engine from their recorded birth times: Clint Eastwood, Elizabeth Taylor, Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep, Prince and Jules Verne. Birth data from Astro-Databank (astro.com), Rodden rating AA. Houses depend on the exact birth time, so a time a few minutes out can move a planet into a neighbouring house.
  • What does Saturn in the 2nd house mean in synastry? When one person's Saturn falls in the other's 2nd house, the Saturn person brings structure, and sometimes criticism, to the other's money and sense of worth. It can feel stabilising or restrictive depending on how kindly it is handled.

What does Saturn in the 3rd house mean?

Saturn in the 3rd house means words, learning and everyday communication carry weight. You may have been a cautious speaker or struggled in early schooling, or had a sibling relationship involving responsibility or distance. Mastery comes through deliberate practice. Writers, teachers and analysts often have this placement working for them.

Where it was in the sky. Saturn in the 3rd house had recently passed the lowest point of the chart (the IC). In Vedic astrology the 3rd is an upachaya (improving) house, where malefics like Saturn are traditionally considered to do well.

What it is like. The 3rd house is the local world: siblings, neighbours, early school, short journeys and how you process information. Saturn here can mean that speaking up once felt risky. Perhaps you were corrected often, labelled slow or given responsibility for a younger sibling. The adult pattern is careful thought, precise wording and real discomfort with sloppiness. Some people with this placement read voraciously; others avoid writing for years and then become formidably good at it.

The gift is credibility. When you say something, it has been checked. The work is fluency without fear. Practical operation: publish or share small, low-stakes pieces regularly. The 3rd house rewards reps more than perfection.

What does Saturn in the 4th house mean?

Saturn in the 4th house means home and family are where you learned responsibility early, and where you later build your foundations yourself. Childhood may have felt strict, cold, unstable or burdened by duty. As an adult you can create the secure base you lacked, often later in life and with unusual commitment.

Where it was in the sky. Saturn in the 4th house was approaching the IC, the lowest point of the chart. The 4th is an angular house, so Saturn here is prominent. Saturn's own cycle tends to re-open family questions: transiting Saturn opposes its natal position between ages 12.9–16.2 and returns between 28.5–29.9 in our chart engine's exact hits for people born from 1915 to 2020.

What it is like. The 4th house is roots: the family you came from, the home you make, the private self and (in many traditions) one parent, often the father in modern Western practice. With Saturn here, people commonly describe a parent who was absent, strict, overburdened or emotionally unavailable, or a home where they had to be the adult. The adult result is often a strong drive to own property, fix up a home, or build a family life with clear structure. There can also be a hard-to-name loneliness, even in good company.

The gift is that you build foundations that hold, for yourself and for others. Saturn in the 4th often matures into the person who anchors a family, a community or an institution. The work is to grieve what you did not get rather than over-engineering a home to compensate. Practical operation: make one room, ritual or relationship that exists purely for rest, not maintenance.

Saturn in the 4th house: common questions

  • Is Saturn in the 4th house good or bad? It is challenging early and stabilising late. Its weight falls on childhood and family, which is why it is often called difficult, but the same Saturn builds lasting foundations in adult life.
  • Why is 4th house Saturn considered a difficult placement? Because it sits at the base of the chart, where you cannot easily get distance from it. Restriction in the family or the inner life is felt as "how things are", and it can take years to see it as something you can change.
  • What are the karmic effects of Saturn in the 4th house? In evolutionary terms the theme is inherited responsibility: carrying family patterns, duties or losses, and the task of becoming your own parent. We read it as a pattern to take ownership of, not a punishment.
  • What does Saturn in the 4th house mean for marriage? It does not set a marriage outcome. It tends to make home-building serious: you may want stability and commitment before sharing a home, and family-of-origin patterns are worth discussing early with a partner.
  • What professions are associated with Saturn in the 4th house? Traditionally real estate, building and architecture, land and agriculture, property management, family business, genealogy and heritage, plus careers that create safety for others (social work, housing).
  • What does Saturn retrograde in the 4th house mean? Retrograde emphasises review. Family themes are often processed internally and revisited in adulthood, sometimes by returning to the family home or history to rework it.

What does Saturn in the 5th house mean?

Saturn in the 5th house means joy, creativity and romance are taken seriously, sometimes too seriously. Play may have felt unsafe or conditional when you were young. You can become a disciplined creator and a devoted, if cautious, lover or parent, once pleasure no longer has to be earned.

Where it was in the sky. Saturn in the 5th house was below the horizon on the western side, still on its way down to the IC. The 5th was called the house of Good Fortune in Hellenistic astrology and is Venus's joy, a mismatch with Saturn's temperament that explains the tension.

What it is like. The 5th house is self-expression: creativity, romance, children, games, risk for the fun of it. Saturn adds a supervisor. People with this placement may remember that being "too much" or too playful drew criticism, or that creative talent was channelled into lessons and grades. As adults they can be serious artists, careful in love and responsible parents. They may also find fun oddly hard and approach dating, hobbies or even holidays as projects.

The gift is craft. Your creative work deepens with time because you practise. The work is play without outcome. Practical operation: schedule one activity each week that you are allowed to be bad at. On children, Saturn here describes how you approach parenthood (with seriousness), not whether or when you will have children.

What does Saturn in the 6th house mean?

Saturn in the 6th house means work, routines and health are your training ground. You may take on heavy workloads, feel responsible for everything going right, or learn your body's limits early. Handled well, it builds a reliable professional and someone whose health habits keep them going for decades.

Where it was in the sky. Saturn in the 6th house had set (crossed the Descendant) in the hours before birth. The 6th is an upachaya house in Vedic astrology, so Saturn here is traditionally considered helpful against obstacles, rivals and illness.

What it is like. The 6th covers daily work, habits, service, colleagues, pets and health maintenance. Saturn here often looks like a strong work ethic tinged with anxiety, a sense that rest must be earned, or being the person who quietly fixes what everyone else leaves undone. The body tends to report stress through chronic tension or fatigue rather than dramatic illness. Routines are both medicine and trap: they steady you, but over-scheduling wears you down.

The gift is mastery of process. You are the professional people trust to get it right. The work is sustainable effort. Practical operation: build recovery into the plan the way you would build in deadlines, because Saturn respects only what is scheduled.

Saturn in the 6th house: common questions

  • Is it good to have Saturn in the 6th house? Often yes. Vedic tradition favours malefics in the 6th, and in Western terms it gives discipline at work. The cost is a tendency to overwork.
  • What happens when Saturn sits in the 6th house? Work and health become areas of responsibility and long-term effort. Expect slow progress, real competence and a need to manage stress deliberately.
  • What diseases are associated with Saturn in the 6th house? We do not make medical predictions, and no placement diagnoses illness. Traditionally Saturn signifies the bones, teeth, skin and joints and chronic rather than acute conditions (Lilly, Christian Astrology). For health concerns, see a doctor; use the placement as a reminder to keep up preventive habits.
  • What is the karma of Saturn in the 6th house? The theme is service without martyrdom: learning to be useful without depleting yourself.
  • What career options suit Saturn in the 6th house? Roles built on precision and process: healthcare, operations, quality assurance, auditing, engineering, administration, skilled trades and research.

What does Saturn in the 7th house mean?

Saturn in the 7th house means relationships are where you learn commitment, boundaries and fairness. Partnerships may come with delay, duty, age differences or hard lessons. Over time you can build unusually durable relationships and professional partnerships, because you take agreements seriously.

Where it was in the sky. Saturn in the 7th house was low in the west at birth and set in the hours that followed. This is an angular house, so Saturn is prominent here. In Vedic astrology Saturn gains directional strength (dig bala) in the 7th.

What it is like. The 7th covers marriage, close partnerships, open adversaries and contracts. Saturn here can describe a fear of dependence, a habit of choosing partners who are older, more serious or more distant, or a long apprenticeship in relationship skills after early disappointment. Some people with this placement marry later. Others marry early and do the growing inside the marriage. The placement describes the texture of commitment, not its timing or success.

The gift is loyalty and fairness. You are a partner, collaborator or business associate others can rely on. The work is to let relationship be a shared structure rather than a test you must pass. Practical operation: make expectations explicit and renegotiate them on a schedule, the way you would review a contract.

What does Saturn in the 8th house mean?

Saturn in the 8th house means you learn to handle shared resources, intimacy and loss with care. Trust is earned slowly, debts and inheritances can come with strings, and death or crisis may have shaped you early. The gift is the ability to stay steady in the deepest waters, emotionally and financially.

Where it was in the sky. Saturn in the 8th house was in the western sky, past its highest point and heading toward the horizon.

What it is like. The 8th covers other people's money (loans, taxes, a partner's income, inheritance), sexual and emotional merging, and endings. Saturn here often means reluctance to depend on anyone financially or emotionally, a careful approach to sex and intimacy, or responsibility for someone else's estate or debts. Fear of losing control is common, and so is quiet competence in exactly the situations other people find unbearable.

The gift is stewardship: financial planners, executors, therapists, researchers and crisis workers often show this signature. The work is to let intimacy include vulnerability. Practical operation: name one fear around dependence and test it in a low-stakes way, such as asking for a small loan of time, help or attention and letting it be given.

  • What happens if saturn is in 8th house? Saturn in the 8th house means you learn to handle shared resources, intimacy and loss with care. The house depends on birth time.
  • What is saturn in the 8th house? Saturn in the 8th house means you learn to handle shared resources, intimacy and loss with care. The house depends on birth time.

What does Saturn in the 9th house mean?

Saturn in the 9th house means your beliefs, education and worldview are built carefully and tested hard. You may doubt inherited faith, take a long or interrupted road through higher education, or feel responsible for "getting it right" philosophically. The result is earned conviction and real expertise.

Where it was in the sky. Saturn in the 9th house had culminated (crossed the Midheaven) in the hours before birth. This is one of the two sectors in Michel Gauquelin's statistical studies (Les hommes et les astres, 1960) where he reported Saturn turning up more often for eminent scientists and physicians. That "Saturn effect" was never as well tested as his Mars result, and later replication attempts dispute it, so treat it as a historical footnote rather than proof.

What it is like. The 9th covers higher learning, religion and philosophy, law, publishing, long journeys and foreign cultures. With Saturn here, belief tends to be examined rather than absorbed. People often describe a strict religious upbringing they later questioned, or a hunger for a framework that can withstand scrutiny. Travel and study may be delayed by money or duty, and then pursued with determination.

The gift is authority in a field of knowledge: academics, lawyers, editors and teachers whose views carry weight because they were built slowly. The work is humility as a habit. Practical operation: keep a running list of things you have changed your mind about. Saturn in the 9th stays wise only while it stays revisable.

Saturn in the 9th house: common questions

  • Is Saturn in the 9th house a good placement? Generally yes for depth and credibility, but it can slow education or make faith a struggle.
  • What are the career prospects for Saturn in the 9th house? Strong in academia, law, publishing, religion or ethics, international work, and any field where credentials and long study matter.

What does Saturn in the 10th house mean?

Saturn in the 10th house means career and reputation are where you build your life's structure. Saturn was climbing to the top of the sky at birth, so ambition, responsibility and public accountability are central. Success tends to come through steady effort, and it lasts if it is built honestly.

Where it was in the sky. Saturn in the 10th house culminated in the hours after birth. This is the most elevated position Saturn can hold, and tradition treats an elevated planet as the most powerful in the chart.

What it is like. The 10th covers vocation, status, public life and (in many systems) the other parent. Saturn here often means early pressure to achieve, a parent who embodied authority, or a strong need to be respected. Tradition warns of the "rise and fall" pattern: status gained through effort can be lost through shortcuts or hubris. Lived, that usually becomes a powerful reason to build carefully.

The gift is leadership and lasting achievement. Saturn is at home at the top of the chart. The work is to let identity be bigger than title. Practical operation: define the legacy you want in terms of what you build, not the position you hold. Saturn in the 10th rewards long arcs.

What does Saturn in the 11th house mean?

Saturn in the 11th house means friendship, community and long-term goals take time and effort. You may feel like an outsider in groups, have fewer but older friends, or take on responsibility in organisations. Your goals mature slowly and are worth the wait. In Vedic astrology the 11th is an improving house for Saturn.

Where it was in the sky. Saturn in the 11th house had risen some hours before birth and was climbing toward the Midheaven. The 11th is an upachaya house in Vedic astrology, where Saturn is traditionally considered to bring gains over time.

What it is like. The 11th covers friends, networks, groups, patrons and hopes for the future. Saturn here often means caution about belonging: feeling excluded early, preferring a few dependable friends, or being the one who organises rather than parties. Long-term goals can feel heavy, yet they are often realised later in life, sometimes through institutions or professional bodies rather than social circles.

The gift is community-building with substance: the trustee, the treasurer, the founder of something that outlasts its members. The work is letting friendship be easy. Practical operation: keep one group commitment that is purely social, where you have no role to perform.

What does Saturn in the 12th house mean?

Saturn in the 12th house means your discipline works behind the scenes: in solitude, inner life and the places most people avoid. Hidden fears or responsibilities can weigh on you, but this is also Saturn's "joy" in Hellenistic astrology. A strong private practice turns that weight into depth, resilience and quiet service.

Where it was in the sky. Saturn in the 12th house rose in the hours before birth. This is the other of Gauquelin's two "key sectors", with the same caveat about replication as the 9th. In the Hellenistic doctrine of planetary joys, Saturn rejoices in the 12th, the house of "Bad Spirit" (Brennan, Hellenistic Astrology, 2017): the malefic is at ease in the place of isolation and hardship.

What it is like. The 12th covers what is hidden or withdrawn: solitude, institutions (hospitals, prisons, monasteries, archives), the unconscious, self-undoing and quiet service. With Saturn here, people often describe free-floating anxiety, a sense of carrying something they cannot name, or difficulty asking for help. Others thrive in back-room roles, research or contemplative practice. Our longer piece on Saturn in the 12th house and hidden fears goes deeper.

The gift is inner discipline: the meditator, archivist, researcher, clinician or carer who does essential work out of view. The work is to give the hidden weight a container. Practical operation: a regular solitary practice (therapy, journaling, prayer, long walks) where fears are named and examined rather than carried.

Two ways it can feel. This placement can show up as a fear of confinement or a sense of invisible limits, or as a deep vocation for solitary work that produces something lasting. Often it is both, at different times of life.

Saturn in the 12th house: common questions

  • Is Saturn in the 12th house good or bad? It is mixed. Modern astrology often treats it as hard (hidden fears, isolation), while Hellenistic astrology calls it Saturn's joy. In practice it is difficult if ignored and powerful if given a deliberate private practice.
  • What does Saturn in the 12th house mean for past lives? Many astrologers read it as unfinished responsibility carried forward. Evolutionary astrologers frame it as a soul-level task of surrender and trust. We treat this as a meaningful frame for reflection, not a verifiable claim.
  • Is Saturn in the 12th house good for marriage? It does not decide marriage. It can make you private or self-protective in relationships, so a partner who respects solitude helps.
  • What does Saturn in Aries in the 12th house mean? Saturn in its fall (Aries) in a hidden house: initiative and anger are the things most likely to be held back. The work is to act on your own behalf, privately and then openly. Saturn stays in Aries until it enters Taurus on 13 Apr 2028, so many current births share this combination.
  • What is the lifespan of someone with Saturn in the 12th house? No placement can predict lifespan, and we don't attempt it.
  • Which celebrities have Saturn in the 12th house? Five well-known people with Rodden AA birth data (from a birth certificate or similar birth record) were born with Saturn in the 12th house (Placidus houses), as calculated by our chart engine from their recorded birth times: Barack Obama, Clark Gable, Angelina Jolie, Robert Redford and Alexander Graham Bell. Birth data from Astro-Databank (astro.com), Rodden rating AA. Houses depend on the exact birth time, so a time a few minutes out can move a planet into a neighbouring house.
  • What is saturn in the 12th house? Saturn in the 12th house means your discipline works behind the scenes: in solitude, inner life and the places most people avoid. The house depends on birth time.

Saturn aspects in the birth chart

What do Saturn aspects mean? An aspect links Saturn's demand for structure to another planet's function. Conjunctions fuse the two, squares and oppositions create friction that forces growth, and trines and sextiles let discipline flow more easily. We count an aspect when it is within 8° (if the Sun, Moon, Ascendant, MC or Descendant is involved) or 6° (planet to planet), and we only call one "exact" when it is within 1°.

Where each aspect lives on this site. Aspects are covered on the hub of the faster planet. Saturn's aspects to the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars and Jupiter are discussed on those hubs; this page covers Saturn's contacts with the slower outer planets. Because those contacts last months or years, they mark whole birth cohorts, so the tables below let you check your birth date.

Saturn–Pluto aspects

Saturn trine Uranus

What does Saturn trine Uranus mean in a natal chart? Saturn trine Uranus brings disciplined innovation and stable reform. The trine lets your sense of duty and limits and your need for freedom support each other with little effort, a gift that is easy to take for granted.

Exact dates from our chart engine (UT), 1925–2045, with the signs involved: 1925–27: 21 Dec 1925, 23 Mar 1926, 30 Oct 1926, 12 Jun 1927, 10 Sep 1927 (Saturn in Scorpio, Uranus in Pisces; Saturn in Sagittarius, Uranus in Aries). 1956–57: 17 Jan 1956, 24 May 1956, 8 Dec 1956, 6 Aug 1957, 20 Oct 1957 (Saturn in Sagittarius, Uranus in Leo; Saturn in Scorpio, Uranus in Cancer). 1972–73: 4 Jul 1972, 30 Oct 1972, 12 May 1973 (Saturn in Gemini, Uranus in Libra). 2002–03: 21 Aug 2002, 16 Dec 2002, 24 Jun 2003 (Saturn in Gemini, Uranus in Aquarius; Saturn in Cancer, Uranus in Pisces). 2016–17: 25 Dec 2016, 19 May 2017, 11 Nov 2017 (Saturn in Sagittarius, Uranus in Aries). Both planets move slowly, so everyone born around these dates shares the aspect; your own chart shows how close it is for you.

Saturn opposite Uranus

What does Saturn opposite Uranus mean in a natal chart? Saturn opposite Uranus meets clashes between old and new through institutions and authority. The opposition pulls your sense of duty and limits and your need for freedom in opposite directions, often through other people, so the task is balance rather than picking a side.

Exact dates from our chart engine (UT), 1925–2045, with the signs involved: 1965–67: 1 Apr 1965, 28 Aug 1965, 24 Feb 1966, 8 Nov 1966, 6 Jan 1967 (Saturn in Pisces, Uranus in Virgo). 2008–10: 4 Nov 2008, 5 Feb 2009, 15 Sep 2009, 26 Apr 2010, 26 Jul 2010 (Saturn in Virgo, Uranus in Pisces; Saturn in Libra, Uranus in Aries). Both planets move slowly, so everyone born around these dates shares the aspect; your own chart shows how close it is for you.

Saturn quincunx Uranus

What does Saturn quincunx Uranus mean in a natal chart? Saturn quincunx Uranus makes security and freedom hard to reconcile, so structures need flexibility. The quincunx links your sense of duty and limits and your need for freedom with nothing in common, so it asks for steady small adjustments rather than one fix.

Exact dates from our chart engine (UT), 1925–2045, with the signs involved: 1960–62: 22 Mar 1960, 31 May 1960, 7 Feb 1961, 5 Aug 1961, 5 Jan 1962 (Saturn in Capricorn, Uranus in Leo; Saturn in Aquarius, Uranus in Virgo). 1969–70: 3 May 1969, 22 Oct 1969, 22 Mar 1970 (Saturn in Taurus, Uranus in Libra). 2005–06: 21 Sep 2005, 19 Jan 2006, 1 Aug 2006 (Saturn in Leo, Uranus in Pisces). 2012–13: 16 Nov 2012, 13 Apr 2013, 5 Oct 2013 (Saturn in Scorpio, Uranus in Aries). Both planets move slowly, so everyone born around these dates shares the aspect; your own chart shows how close it is for you.

Saturn with Jupiter and the personal planets

  • Jupiter–Saturn: growth versus limits, the social "great conjunction" cycle of about 19.88 years (latest 21 Dec 2020 at 0°29' Aquarius). Covered on the Jupiter hub.
  • Sun–Saturn: identity built through responsibility. Saturn conjoins the Sun about every 378 days and spends about 19.6 days within the traditional combustion zone of 8½°, so roughly 5.2% of people are born with Saturn that close to the Sun. Covered on the Sun hub.
  • Moon–Saturn: emotional self-reliance learned early. The Moon conjoins Saturn every 27.4 days on average. Covered on the Moon hub.
  • Mercury–, Venus– and Mars–Saturn: disciplined thinking, serious love and controlled drive respectively. Covered on those hubs.

Your Saturn return

When is the Saturn return? Your first Saturn return comes when transiting Saturn reaches its exact natal position again, between ages 28.5–29.9 in our chart engine's exact hits for 22 sample births (1 January, every fifth year, 1915–2020), and the second between 58.2–59.7. It marks a reckoning with what you have built: structures that fit are strengthened and those that don't are dismantled.

Why the timing varies. In the 1900–2100 data Saturn took 29.09–29.86 years to come back to the same sign. It is also retrograde 36.4% of the time, so the return can be a single exact pass or three (direct, retrograde, direct) spread over most of a year. Exactly when yours falls depends on where Saturn was in its retrograde loop when you were born, which is why we calculate it from your chart rather than quoting one age for everyone.

The Saturn cycle in phases:

Phase Exact hits fell at these ages (22 sample births, 1915–2020) Example: born 1 Jan 1990, exact hits (UT)
First (waxing) square 5.8–8.9 15 May 1997, 26 Oct 1997 and 3 Feb 1998 (ages 7.4–8.1)
Opposition 12.9–16.2 29 Jun 2004 (age 14.5)
Closing (waning) square 20.9–23.4 14 Dec 2010, 10 Mar 2011 and 5 Sep 2011 (ages 20.9–21.7)
First Saturn return 28.5–29.9 7 Feb 2019, 31 Jul 2019 and 4 Nov 2019 (ages 29.1–29.8)
Second waxing square 35.6–38.1 22 Mar 2027 (age 37.2)
Second opposition 42.7–46.0 10 Aug 2033, 5 Feb 2034 and 23 Apr 2034 (ages 43.6–44.3)
Second closing square 50.0–52.5 12 Oct 2040 (age 50.8)
Second Saturn return 58.2–59.7 4 Apr 2048, 14 May 2048 and 16 Dec 2048 (ages 58.3–59.0)

Who is having a Saturn return now? Saturn is in Aries (11°01' Aries on 8 Oct 2026), so people born with Saturn in Aries (see the Aries table; mostly 1996–99 births) are in their first return, and people born with Saturn in Aries in 1967–69 are in their second. For your own exact dates, your timing report calculates them from your chart.

What it is like. Most people describe the return as a narrowing of options followed by clarity. Commitments that were made by default (career, relationship, city, identity) are tested, and the ones you choose again become load-bearing. The task is to take authorship. Ask of each part of your life: "Would I build this again, knowing what I know?"

Saturn retrograde

What does Saturn retrograde mean? Saturn appears to move backward for about 137.6 days roughly once a year, which is why about 36.4% of people are born with it retrograde. Natally it suggests self-imposed standards and authority that develops internally. As a transit it is a review period for structures and commitments.

Ephemeris facts. Over 1900–2100 Saturn completed 194 retrograde periods lasting 133.6–141.4 days. Around each station it barely moves for weeks, so planets near a station degree feel Saturn for a long time. Recent and upcoming stations:

Station Date and position (UT)
Retrograde 13 Jul 2025 at 1°56' Aries
Direct 28 Nov 2025 at 25°09' Pisces
Retrograde 26 Jul 2026 at 14°45' Aries
Direct 10 Dec 2026 at 7°56' Aries
Retrograde 9 Aug 2027 at 27°53' Aries

Which signs does the 2026 Saturn retrograde affect? Sun signs on their own are a weak guide. The retrograde between 26 Jul 2026 at 14°45' Aries and 10 Dec 2026 at 7°56' Aries matters most if you have a planet or angle between those two degrees of Aries, or of the other cardinal signs (Cancer, Libra, Capricorn), which Saturn squares or opposes. Saturn also opposed the Sun on 4 Oct 2026, the midpoint of this retrograde. For Scorpio, Capricorn or any other sign, the meaningful question is what Saturn touches in your chart. Your timing report works that out.

Natal Saturn retrograde. Traditional astrologers saw a retrograde planet as weakened. Modern psychological astrologers read natal Saturn retrograde as authority that has to be internalised: you may have lacked a reliable outside model of structure, so you built your own. That makes for exacting inner standards and, eventually, unusual self-reliance.

Vedic note: Saturn (Shani) in sidereal astrology

This site uses the tropical zodiac. Vedic (Jyotish) astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which on 8 Oct 2026 was offset by 24.23° (Lahiri ayanamsa), so Saturn was at 16°47' Pisces sidereal while tropical Saturn was in Aries. Your Vedic Saturn sign is often one sign earlier than your Western one.

  • Dignities match. Shani rules Capricorn and Aquarius (moolatrikona in Aquarius), is exalted in Libra and debilitated in Aries in both systems. It is not debilitated in Scorpio.
  • Sade Sati is the roughly seven-and-a-half-year period while Saturn transits the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from your sidereal Moon sign. With Saturn in sidereal Pisces it applies to sidereal Moon signs Aquarius, Pisces and Aries, so it is no longer running for a sidereal Capricorn Moon.
  • Saturn mahadasha lasts 19 years in the Vimshottari system (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra). No dasha is inherently the "hardest" or "luckiest". Results depend on Saturn's dignity, house and lordship in your chart. For a Capricorn ascendant, Saturn rules the 1st house and is generally considered supportive.
  • Shani in the 1st house is classically read as seriousness and endurance, and the Vedic upachaya houses (3, 6, 10, 11) are considered good for Saturn.
  • We do not make predictions about death or lifespan from dashas or any other technique.

For dasha timing, consult a Jyotish practitioner; our reports are built on tropical, Placidus methods.

Saturn FAQ

What does the placement of Saturn in my birth chart mean?

It shows where you are asked to grow up: the area (house) and style (sign) in which you meet limits early and build lasting competence over time. Read it with Saturn's aspects to the Sun, Moon and angles, which make it personal.

Which house is bad for Saturn?

No house is simply bad. Saturn is hardest to live with where it restricts something you need early. Astrologers often single out the 4th (family), 5th (joy), 7th (partnership) and 12th (hidden fears). But Hellenistic astrology calls the 12th Saturn's joy, and Vedic astrology considers the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th good for it.

Which house is best for Saturn, and where is it strongest?

By tradition Saturn is strongest when angular, especially in the 10th (elevated) or 7th (Vedic directional strength), and comfortable in the 3rd, 6th, 11th and 12th. "Strong" means effective, not easy: a strong Saturn demands a lot and delivers a lot.

What is a strong Saturn placement?

Saturn in Capricorn, Aquarius or Libra, in a day chart, angular, and well aspected. Signs of a strong Saturn in a life include reliability, long-term planning, comfort with responsibility and achievements that keep growing with age.

What signs does Saturn rule?

Capricorn and Aquarius (traditional rulership; modern astrology gives Aquarius to Uranus as co-ruler). Saturn is exalted in Libra, in detriment in Cancer and Leo, and in fall in Aries.

Does Saturn bring wealth?

Saturn rewards patience, so it is associated with wealth that is built rather than won: savings, property, businesses and skills that compound. A well-placed Saturn in the 2nd, 10th or 11th is a traditional signature, but no single placement guarantees money.

At what age does Saturn give good results? Which planet gives late success?

Saturn is the planet of late success. Western astrologers associate its payoff with the years after the first Saturn return (exact between ages 28.5–29.9 in our sample births), and a widely repeated Vedic teaching says Saturn "matures" at 36. Effort made in your twenties tends to show results in your thirties and beyond.

How long does Saturn stay in each sign?

On average 2.2 years (Gemini) to 2.74 years (Sagittarius), calculated over 1900–2100. It takes 29.41 years on average to get back to the same sign.

How often is Saturn retrograde?

About once a year, for 133.6–141.4 days. Saturn is retrograde 36.4% of the time.

What happens if Saturn is in the 12th house?

It works behind the scenes: hidden responsibilities and fears, plus great capacity for solitary, disciplined inner work. See Saturn in the 12th house.

Sources and method

  • Positions and dates: every astronomical figure on this page comes from Astrology-API.io v3, the chart engine behind natalblueprint.com, queried in October 2026 with our report settings: tropical zodiac, geocentric apparent positions, Placidus houses, mean lunar node, UT. Sign changes, stations and retrograde periods use its mundane-events search (1900–2100); exact aspect dates use its aspect-passages search (1900–2100); Saturn–Sun conjunctions use its Sun-conjunction search (1950–2050); today's and sidereal positions use its global-positions data. Averages, ranges and percentages are simple arithmetic on those dates. Transit-to-natal dates and ages (your Saturn return and phase) are exact hits from the engine's natal-transit search for sample births at 12:00 UT on 1 January of every fifth year from 1915 to 2020; an age is simply the time from that birth to the exact hit, and nothing is interpolated.
  • Orbs: the site's published orb table (8° luminaries and angles, 6° other majors). This is our rule, not an astronomical measurement. See our method.
  • We do not use outside astronomical tables on this page; where the engine does not supply a figure, we describe the point without a number.
