How to use this page. Find your Mercury sign in the dates table inside each sign section (2024–2028 dates are listed; for other years, use your chart). Four things that change how Mercury works in your chart:

1. Essential dignity. Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, is exalted in Virgo (traditionally strongest at 15°), and is in detriment in Sagittarius and Pisces and in fall in Pisces (Ptolemy, Tetrabiblos I.17–19; Lilly, Christian Astrology, 1647). It is the only planet whose exaltation is one of its own signs.
2. Morning or evening Mercury. Mercury rising before the Sun was read as a quicker, more outward-facing mind; Mercury setting after the Sun as more reflective. Births split almost exactly in half: 49.9% morning, 50.1% evening. In Hellenistic doctrine Mercury takes the sect of whichever side of the Sun it is on (Brennan, Hellenistic Astrology, 2017).
3. Closeness to the Sun. Mercury within 8½° of the Sun (25.01% of births) was called combust in tradition; within 17 arcminutes (0.814%) it is cazimi, "in the heart of the Sun". See Mercury and the Sun.

Mercury in the signs

Your Mercury sign describes the style of your mind: how fast you decide, whether you think in pictures, systems, feelings or arguments, and how you like to be spoken to. Mercury usually spends two to three weeks in a sign, but a retrograde can hold it in one sign for more than two months, so people born weeks apart can share a Mercury sign. • What happens if Mercury is debilitated? Communication and analysis work less conventionally, not less well. People with a debilitated Mercury often think in images, music or feelings. In Vedic astrology debilitation can be cancelled (neecha bhanga) by other factors, so it is never judged alone.

Mercury in the houses

Your Mercury house shows where your mind is busiest: the part of life you think about, talk about and learn through. Unlike the sign, the house depends on your birth time. As the Earth turns, Mercury moves through all twelve houses in a single day, so a birth time that is out by an hour or two can change the house.

Because Mercury is never more than 27.8° from the Sun, it usually sits in the same house as your Sun or a neighbouring one, and your Mercury house is a fairly good clue to your time of birth.
