What does Mars mean in a birth chart? Mars shows how you act, assert yourself and go after what you want. It describes your drive, anger, courage, competitiveness and sexual energy. Its sign shows your style of action, its house shows where you fight hardest, and its aspects show what fuels or frustrates that energy.

Mars is the planet people search for when they want to understand anger, ambition or attraction. It is also the most irregular of the visible planets in its timing: it can race through a sign in a few weeks or sit in one for more than half a year when it turns retrograde. Every date and position below comes from Astrology-API.io, the chart engine behind our reports (tropical zodiac, geocentric apparent positions, Placidus houses, mean node), queried for this page. The orbs are our own published site rule. Where the astrology is interpretation rather than astronomy, we say so.

How to use this page. Find your Mars sign in the dates table inside each sign section. Mars can change sign more than once in a few months when it is retrograde, so if you were born near a change, check your chart. Your Mars house needs an accurate birth time (why). Then read the aspects, Mars retrograde and the FAQ, which covers the best and worst houses for Mars.

Four things that change how Mars works in your chart:

  1. Essential dignity. Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, is exalted in Capricorn (traditionally strongest at 28°), and is in detriment in Libra and Taurus and in fall in Cancer (Ptolemy, Tetrabiblos I.17–19; Lilly, Christian Astrology, 1647).
  2. Sect. Mars is the malefic of the night team. In a night chart (Sun below the horizon) Mars is "in sect" and its energy is more constructive; in a day chart it is out of sect and traditionally harder to handle (Brennan, Hellenistic Astrology, 2017).
  3. Retrograde. A retrograde Mars turns energy inward: more strategy, more second thoughts, delayed anger. See Mars retrograde.
  4. Aspects within orb. Mars contacts to the Sun, Moon or an angle within 8° make its drive part of your identity. Contacts with Saturn, Uranus or Pluto show how your energy meets limits, surprises or power.

Mars in the signs

Your Mars sign describes how you act: how you go after goals, handle conflict and express desire. It is especially useful for understanding anger and attraction, which is why it features so heavily in compatibility. Mars spends very different lengths of time in each sign, because its speed varies and it turns retrograde about every two years, often for months in a single sign.

What does Mars in Aries mean?

Mars in Aries means you act fast, directly and with total commitment. Mars rules Aries, so this is one of its strongest placements: brave, competitive and energetic, you move first and think later. Mars in the houses

Your Mars house shows where you put your energy and where you fight: the part of life where you are most driven, competitive and impatient, and where conflict tends to arise. Unlike the sign, the house depends on your birth time. Mars crosses all twelve houses every day as the Earth turns, so an error of an hour or two can move it.

In traditional astrology Mars was considered difficult in the angular houses, where its heat is most visible, and was said to rejoice in the 6th, the house of illness and labour (Brennan, Hellenistic Astrology, 2017). Modern astrologers read every house as a place where Mars can be used well. We give the sky position for each house below.

What does Mars in the 1st house mean?

Mars in the 1st house means you come across as energetic, direct and assertive. You approach life head-on, you are competitive and physically active, and people see your drive straight away. You may have a strong body, a quick temper and an appetite for challenge. The shadow is aggression and impatience. The gift is courage and vitality.

Where it was in the sky. Mars was just below the eastern horizon, about to rise.

What it is like. The 1st covers the body, appearance and approach to life. People with Mars here often play sport, take the lead and are quick to act. Traditional texts associate it with scars or marks on the head or face, and with a fiery, decisive manner. They do best when they have a physical outlet for their energy.

The gift is boldness. The work is pausing before reacting. Practical step: build daily physical exercise into your routine to give your energy somewhere to go.

Mars in the 1st house: common questions

  • Is Mars in the first house good or bad? Neither. It gives energy, courage and leadership, along with impatience and a quick temper. Used consciously, it is a powerful placement for athletes, entrepreneurs and anyone who needs to take initiative.

What does Mars in the 2nd house mean?

Mars in the 2nd house means you are driven to earn, own and secure your resources. You work hard for money and can be competitive about it. You may earn through physical work, sport, engineering or entrepreneurial risk. You spend as fast as you earn. The shadow is impulsive spending and conflict over money. The gift is earning power.

Where it was in the sky. Mars was below the eastern horizon and would rise within a few hours.

What it is like. The 2nd covers income, possessions and self-worth. People with Mars here often fight for financial independence and feel most confident when they have their own money. They can be possessive and defensive about what they own.

The gift is drive to provide. The work is patience with money. Practical step: wait a day before any large purchase.

What does Mars in the 3rd house mean?

Mars in the 3rd house means sharp words, a fast mind and plenty of nervous energy. You speak up, argue well and are always on the move. Relationships with siblings or neighbours may involve rivalry or conflict. You are a strong, persuasive communicator. The shadow is harsh words and impatience. The gift is mental courage.

Where it was in the sky. Mars was below the eastern horizon, just past the lowest point of the chart.

What it is like. The 3rd covers communication, siblings, short journeys and early education. People with Mars here are often journalists, debaters, teachers and drivers. They enjoy a good argument and dislike being contradicted. They need mental stimulation and variety.

The gift is persuasive speech. The work is listening. Practical step: in your next disagreement, summarise the other person's point before replying.

What does Mars in the 4th house mean?

Mars in the 4th house means your drive is rooted in home and family. You may have grown up in an energetic or conflict-filled household, and you put a lot of energy into your home: renovating, moving or protecting family. You are fiercely protective. The shadow is anger expressed at home. The gift is the strength to build a secure base.

Where it was in the sky. Mars was near the lowest point of the chart, below your feet.

What it is like. The 4th covers home, family, ancestry and property. People with Mars here often work from home, renovate houses or invest in property. They may move often. Under stress, tension shows up at home first.

What does Mars retrograde mean? Mars retrograde is a period of a couple of months, about every two years, when Mars appears to move backwards. Astrologers read it as energy turning inward: a time to review plans, revisit old conflicts and rethink how you use your drive, rather than launch new battles. Born with it, you act strategically.

Ephemeris facts. Between 1900 and 2100 the engine records 94 Mars retrograde periods, lasting 59.9 to 81.2 days (mean 73.7), with one starting every 780.2 days on average. People with natal Mars retrograde may find conventional competition uncomfortable and do better setting their own pace.

Living through Mars retrograde. Traditional advice is to avoid starting fights, major surgery or big new ventures if you can, and to use the time to finish, repair and plan. Arguments that flare up often involve old issues. The weeks around the stations, when Mars is almost still (10 Jan 2027 at 10°26' Virgo and 1 Apr 2027 at 20°56' Leo next time), are the most intense.

Mars and the lunar nodes

What does Mars conjunct the North Node mean? It means your growth path asks you to act: courage, initiative and independence move you forward. You may be drawn to leadership, sport or causes. Your Mars return

Mars returns to the same sign every 1.88 years on average, but the exact return to your natal degree does not keep a fixed rhythm, because Mars turns retrograde every 780.2 days on average and can loop back over your natal degree. For people born at 12:00 UT on 1 January 1990, 1995 and 2000, our chart engine puts the first six exact Mars returns on these dates:

Mars return Born 1 Jan 1990 Born 1 Jan 1995 Born 1 Jan 2000
1st 13 Dec 1991 (age 1.9) 4 Nov 1996 (age 1.8) 6 Dec 2001 (age 1.9)
2nd 23 Nov 1993 (age 3.9) 11 Oct 1998 (age 3.8) 12 Jun 2003 (age 3.4)
3rd 3 Nov 1995 (age 5.8) 21 Sep 2000 (age 5.7) 28 Apr 2005 (age 5.3)
4th 13 Oct 1997 (age 7.8) 2 Sep 2002 (age 7.7) 3 Apr 2007 (age 7.2)
5th 18 Sep 1999 (age 9.7) 14 Aug 2004 (age 9.6) 12 Mar 2009 (age 9.2)
6th 6 Mar 2001 (age 11.2) 27 Jul 2006 (age 11.6) 20 Feb 2011 (age 11.1)

A Mars return marks the start of a new cycle of effort and ambition: a good time to set goals and start projects. When Mars turns retrograde close to your natal degree, the return perfects three times (direct, retrograde, direct) over several months.

Mars in compatibility and synastry

In synastry, Mars shows attraction, desire and friction. The classic chemistry contacts are Mars conjunct, trine or opposite the partner's Venus (strong physical attraction), Mars–Moon (passion and emotional reactivity: see our articles on Mars conjunct Moon in synastry and Mars trine Moon in synastry) and Mars–Sun (energy and sometimes competition). Mars–Saturn contacts bring frustration or durable commitment; Mars–Pluto contacts bring intensity and power dynamics.

Mars sign compatibility. Mars signs of the same element (fire, earth, air or water) usually act in compatible ways: two fire Mars signs fight and make up quickly, two earth Mars signs work steadily together. Mars signs in square tend to clash over pace and method. Compatibility depends on the whole chart, so use your chart for a proper comparison.

Vedic note: Mars (Mangal) in sidereal astrology

This site uses the tropical zodiac. Vedic (Jyotish) astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, offset on 8 Oct 2026 by 24.23° (Lahiri ayanamsa), so Mars was at 11°33' Cancer sidereal while it was in Leo in the tropical zodiac. Your Vedic Mars sign is often one sign earlier than your Western one.

  • Dignities. Mangal is exalted in Capricorn (deepest at 28°), debilitated in Cancer (deepest at 28°), has its moolatrikona in the first part of Aries and rules Aries and Scorpio (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra).
  • Mangal dosha (Kuja dosha). Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the Lagna, Moon or Venus is traditionally linked with friction in marriage; many cancellation rules apply, and it is often matched by the same dosha in the partner's chart (Phaladeepika).
  • Special aspects. Besides the 7th house, Mars aspects the 4th and 8th houses from itself in Jyotish.
  • Directional strength. Mars gains dig bala in the 10th house.
  • Mars mahadasha lasts 7 years in the Vimshottari system and is traditionally associated with energy, property, siblings, courage, conflict and surgery.

Mars FAQ

In which house is Mars worst?

Traditional astrology considered Mars hardest to handle in the angular houses, especially the 1st and 7th, and in the 8th and 12th, where its heat is turned against health, partners or oneself. Vedic astrology adds the houses of Mangal dosha for marriage. In practice, no house is purely bad; awareness and outlets matter most.

What is the strongest Mars placement?

By sign, Mars is strongest in Capricorn (exaltation), Aries and Scorpio (its own signs). By house, Vedic astrology gives Mars directional strength in the 10th; traditional Western astrology gives it joy in the 6th. A night birth puts Mars in sect, which also helps.

What if Mars is in the 9th house?

You fight for your beliefs, love adventure and may be drawn to law, teaching, travel or activism. It is a good placement for energy put into learning and causes, but it can make you argumentative about religion or politics.

In which house is Mars best?

Many astrologers favour the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th, where Mars's energy goes into effort, work, career and goals. Jyotish agrees that Mars as a natural malefic does well in the 3rd, 6th and 11th, and gains strength in the 10th.

In which house is Mars bad for marriage?

In Vedic astrology, Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th creates Mangal dosha, traditionally linked with marital friction. Western astrology looks at Mars's aspects to Venus, the Moon and the 7th house ruler instead. Neither is a verdict on any marriage.

How do you remove the malefic effects of Mars?

Astrology describes energy rather than fate. Practical remedies are physical exercise, honest conflict and channelling Mars into work or a cause. Vedic tradition adds remedies such as Tuesday fasting, recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa and charity; gemstones should only be worn on expert advice.

How long does Mars stay in a sign?

On average 45.6 to 61.2 days depending on the sign, but it can be much longer when Mars is retrograde: up to 235 days in the record.

What body part does Mars rule?

In traditional medical astrology Mars rules the head (with Aries), the muscles, blood, adrenal glands and the sexual organs (with Scorpio), and is linked with fevers, inflammation, cuts and burns.

Which Mars signs are the most powerful?

Aries and Scorpio, its home signs, and Capricorn, its exaltation. Mars is considered weaker in Libra and Taurus (detriment) and Cancer (fall). "Weak" means its energy works less directly, not that it is absent.

Sources and method

  • Positions and dates: every astronomical figure on this page comes from Astrology-API.io v3, the chart engine behind natalblueprint.com, queried in October 2026 with our report settings: tropical zodiac, geocentric apparent positions, Placidus houses, mean lunar node, UT. Mars sign changes, stations and retrograde periods use its mundane-events search (1900–2100), cross-checked against each other; exact Mars aspect dates use its aspect-passages search (1950–2050) and its Sun-conjunction search; today's and sidereal positions use its global-positions data. Averages, ranges, counts and the return-to-sign interval are simple arithmetic on those dates. Mars-return dates are exact hits from the engine's natal-transit search for sample births at 12:00 UT on 1 January 1990, 1995 and 2000.
  • Orbs: the site's published orb table (8° luminaries and angles, 6° other majors). This is our rule, not an astronomical measurement. See our method.
